Awareness of a potential Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) risk is essential. The earlier in the process that proactive steps are taken to confirm a risk exists can often drastically reduce the impact UXO has to a project or community. The process to indentify, address and mitigate or reduce the UXO risk to a level as low as it is practicable (ALARP) to achieve is not, as some have suggested a “Black Art” but is in fact a logical, systematic, well planned operation. In Bethnal Green during 2015, MACC found a 250kg German bomb below a cellar floor during renovation work.
